“Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” — Aretha Franklin

1993

If memory serves, this was the first piece completed to something more than a chiptune. it’s entirely composed of samples I lifted from CDs I had at the time, but nothing so blatant that you’d recognize. A chord here, a single percussion noise there, a single bass note over there… I was starting a collection of samples, and I was trying to learn the ScreamTracker program. And this was the result.

It’s not a great piece, but it’s a piece of my history so I always keep it around and listen to it from time to time. It’s a slow and clumsily atmospheric piece, but the remix is very reminiscent of Jam & Spoon.

Because ‘Pendulum’ was one of the first tracks I made when I was experimenting with ScreamTracker back then. I had a bit of fun remaking the original mod in 2023, including the original samples in HQ. A new remix in a modern trance style was also completed with live piano parts.

This is the original mix — more or less. At some point in the 90’s I ported this over from ScreamTracker to FastTracker and replaced an ugly bass sample that bothered me. The original mix is lost to the sands of time.

Shortly after creating the original mix, I tried an opposite mix in a trance style.

I decided recently re rebuild the track using all the original samples and parts but with my current DAW. So this is the result of that; everything is the same, bar for bar.

I did the same treatment with the original remix as well.
