“Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” — Aretha Franklin

Perpetual Emotion Machine

from The Unforetold

2009

Haven was co-written with Sanaa Rush. She has sent me this rough chord progression and a drum loop she had done up in garage band and said for me to ‘go to town’ and see what I could make of it. The track was completed within a few hours and I was so happy with it, there were no other versions. It was a single session in a night.

This was one of those sessions where I felt I didn’t want to stop, which is why the song kept building and progression, moving from a slow almost orchestral phrasing to an energetic drum and bass iteration of itself and then to a denouement as the outro.
