This started off as a chip tune in two different variants. I was looking for a dark IDM kind of tone, like VNV Nation. Also I was feeling a bit dark that day. The lyrics are a bit of a stream-of-consciousness, but are focused on an existential crises. Originally, the song was called ‘I/0’ but I changed the title after I saw that Peter Gabriel released an album in 2023 with that title.
As this is meant to the the lead-off single for Slash, I have a number of versions on the go right now, each slightly different. The ‘original’ version begins with the vocal section, and the second half of the song changes from minor to its relative major is an electro-orchestral arrangement that takes you to the end of the song. This will likely be considered the ‘extended version’. For the album version, I intend to flip the sections, so that the album opens with an alternate arrangement of the electro-orchestral section, and then lead into the vocal section which in turn will mesh seamlessly into the following song on the album. A ‘single’ version — just the vocal part — is also in the making.
