All Messed Up (And Nowhere To Go)

Key 20

EtherReal

From Headspace

1997

This is the opening track for my first proper ‘album’, Headspace. The basis for this song was hacked out at the Omniverge studio, while I was messing around with a Kurzweil K2000. Then, it was only the chord progression that I resolved to remember, and build a trance track around it. I thought it was a great energetic opener for the album, and it’s still one of my favourites.

Good Thing 12″ release

I also built some of this around the ill-fated remix I did of Good Thing by Masters of Vision, since I had not heard from him about its release. The bongos and most of the other percussion were based around what I used on that mix. Later, that remix turned up on a promo-only 12″. I came across it in 2000 or so for $1.

This is the first time you hear my voice on a piece of music. I recorded myself saying “I’ll never give up trying,” and then retriggered it within the tracker to stutter it up. It sounds like nothing now, but I thought I was being so cutting-edge. What does the phrase mean? I’m not certain. I am thinking that at the time, I considered actually making a go of music, and perhaps this was meant to be a self fulfilling prophecy.

I cannibalized this song a year later when doing the remix of Give of with Revenant.

Good Thing (Vlev & Ether Remix)

Masters Of Vision

This remix (for which I was paid $100 by the producer) took eight hours and was done entirely at the Omniverge studio (no trackers anywhere to be found). The original song was quite pop/dance and straight down the middle, I wanted to do something that was a little reminiscent of the early 90’s. This version was released on 12″ vinyl as a BMG promo in 1996.

Masters Of Vision

This mix is identical to the above, except that is has fewer lyrics in the bridge. It was recorded to cassette from DAT after the session and was not the version released by BMG.

EtherReal

This is the 2006 remaster of the album version. It was re-tracked using the original beds and was spatialized and affected for warmth.

Give (EtherReal Frozen Embrace Remix)

Revenant

This was completed sometime around 1997, and the basis of the remix was the FastTracker file I created. It was transfered to digital storage as raw multitrack and mixed down using the studio’s CAD console. Several elements were added during the session.
