Portals is a new song for the Slash album. Full disclosure, this song is one of two tracks which have lyrics that have been partially assisted by AI — I’d say about 35%, the rest, including the music and arrangement, is my own work.

The song is an exploration of a life which has taken many drastic turns and which seems to the singer to be one continuous life — it is perceived through the lens of trauma and hard times, and whenever they look back on it, it doesn’t seem like it’s actually their life, although it is. It also focuses on the idea that people that you once considered your deepest friends or soul mates or lovers are now no longer to be found — essentially strangers — and how strange that can be when you think of your life linearly. It might even be difficult, with the added strain of bad mental health, to believe any of that past was even real, or if you have been moving through the multiverse.

I’d seen too many people on social media ascribing to the idea that there was a ‘timeline shift’ in 2012, or whatever, and all this talk about ‘manifesting’ yourself to different universes where things work out for you, that’s where this is coming from. I don’t believe any of that, but it was an interesting idea to put into a song.

There are currently no recordings of this for public consumption.
